The Joy in Rediscovering Passion

Since transitioning into being a stay at home mom, I feel like there’s been a huge sense of loss. Not working professionally and doing things I really enjoyed caused a piece of me to go into hiding. Knowing that returning to the workforce wasn’t on the agenda anytime soon meant I needed to find another outlet to get my “passion spark” back. The truth is I didn’t know how it was going to happen. My blog started back in 2019 in a notebook with brainstorming ideas and rough drafts on a lot of different topics. I kept bugging my webmaster (the hubs) to get me setup and it felt like it was taking forever..it really did take a long time. Fast forward to 2020 and it was finally tangible, but some of that earlier zeal had died down and I started being inconsistent. I was ready for the work, but my brain couldn’t sustain what I had started. I had to do a lot of introspection about what I wanted my blog to look like and truthfully I wanted it to mimic my life. Now that I’ve changed my blog topics, I feel that passion spark I mentioned earlier. It’s easy to jot down notes on the weekend or randomly and not feel overwhelmed about writing an entire article about the topic. It’s cathartic.

Quarantine, while super hard for some, was an awakening for me. I finally decided to quit just watching YouTube videos of people doing and started trying to do some things myself. I now have a ton of projects throughout my entire house because of this and my girls get to have fun with all of the seasonal changes I make to their space. They also get to help make their name door hangers that change with the season as well. This has allowed us to connect in something we all enjoy. Since going down the rabbit hole, I’ve discovered a passion for upcycling and making old things become new. I love it so much I’ve decided to make it my side hustle and recently purchased my first piece (*Follow me on IG @melanin_mom_chronicles to stay tuned to projects and progress). Throughout this entire process I’ve discovered a person that has found excitement everyday because of the new possibilities ahead. I honestly have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m learning how to maximize the time I have by acquiring new skills and challenging myself without the added pressures associated with a regular job. There’s no timeline for this new journey, but I’m going to ride the wave and have fun until I want to get off and then I’ll pick up something else and run with that. It’s honestly scary, but it is 100% not stagnant.

Here’s 3 tips that might help you find your spark if it’s dwindled:

- Try random things. Most of the projects I’m undertaking were foreign to me. I had absolutely no experience in any of it, but I was willing to give it a try. I researched and went to work. I have plenty of fails (they don’t make pictures most of the time), but I have lots of wins and those wins contributed to my spark.

Challenge Yourself. Stop being comfortable and sticking to things you know you’re good at or believe you can do. You really never know what’s in you until you’re faced with something that the outcome is uncertain. The competitive nature in me was all the drive I needed. If you’ve read any of my previous blogs you know 2020 was the year I proved me wrong and so from now until forever I will gladly take on things that seem too hard. If they are, I’ll seek help from someone who knows and keep going.

No more excuses. There will always be something else (Periodt). That shouldn’t mean that you continue to push everyone else to greatness while you dim your light. The whole team/family should be winning and that includes you. There’s room enough for you to push someone else while cheering for yourself to be great. I started including me in the my schedule and prioritizing the things that mattered to me just like I did with everything else. Be intentional with your spark.

What are your area(s) of passion?
