Living in the “Then What”…

From a very young age, I planned out my life. I knew I didn’t want to live in my hometown, I knew I wanted to be married with kids, and I knew I wanted a house by 25. I had at least these three figured out by middle school and would proudly share all of that with my family members as often as I could. There are many days my adult self envies that little girl. Each of those things she desired, she accomplished. Unfortunately in college, everything started becoming a little less clear. I eventually ended up with two degrees and a 12 year career in a field that wasn’t apart of my “plan”

Since my youngest has started school, I can’t recall how many times I’ve been asked when I’m going back to work. My answer is usually always the same: NEVER (Let me pause and shoutout my husband for pushing me into this mindset). I haven’t worked in a “regular job” since 2012 when I discovered the world of contract work and working from home, but I also am not interested in going back into the therapy/social services world. After most people heard me say never the next question was, “then what are you going to do?” Initially, I can admit I had no idea. I would laugh it off, but being in my late 30s and not having a plan for my life outside of wife and mom wasn’t something I could stay satisfied with. It wasn’t until the lockdown that I was able to find something I was passionate about. Currently, I’m focused on building my business in interior decorating while attempting to explore options of possibly finding ways to incorporate utilizing my degree. I don’t have another option and I’ve giving this everything I have. Even if this doesn’t work out, I refuse to be lead by fear of “what if”. So this season is riding the grateful train and making the most of the opportunities I’m given.

My life doesn’t look like the one I dreamed about as a little girl, but I can admit that I didn’t even know this type of life was possible. Me not getting the life I wanted has been the best thing that ever happened to me. I would love to hear other stories of experiencing something similar to this as well as what you did. And for the person currently experiencing this and struggling: Life happens and things don’t always work out as planned, but I want to encourage you to put one foot in the other and just commit to being the best version of you even if you don’t really have an idea of what’s next.

5 Things I Hate About Working Out

Let me start by saying, I actually enjoy working out. Not all the time, but the results drive me to keep going. Continual body changes and an overall feeling of being in good health encourage me to keep my body active. However, I do experience a few things that frustrate me to no end.

After 3 kids, my bladder is garbage. I try to drink around a gallon of water a day and that tends to require needing to use the potty (I’m a mommy so this is the word of choice) often, but this is something completely different. Before staring a workout, I make certain to take a restroom break. Within the first 2-3 minutes of my workout, which is normally just the warm-up, I have to stop and make a mad dash to avoid wetting myself. The amount of times I need to stop varies by the workout so it could be as little as once or as many as three times, but I always finish so that’s the silver lining.
Buying stuff that I’ve never needed before. This list isn’t terribly long, but it still exists. While I’m not stranger to an active lifestyle, I never encountered problems in my previous weight loss journey like these. My thighs have always (even when I was 135 pounds) touched. Now that I’ve successfully lost a good amount of weight and my thighs have decreased in size, I have started getting “boils” on my inner thighs due to all of the friction. They just pop up out of nowhere and they usually are somewhat painful. Not only do they happen on my inner thighs, I’ve been fortunate enough to get them under my arms. My solution has been BodyGlide. I typically apply it prior to working out and when I’m getting dressed. I’ll be honest, I forget a lot because sometimes I have to force myself into workout mode and thinking about anything else is just too much. I’m hoping that I won’t need BodyGlide forever, but for now we have become best friends
Styling my hair is a complete no-go. Being a kinky- coily, curly girl makes this a little easier, but I sweat like a man. Not the man that just has a little running down the side of his face. I speaking of the one that his entire shirt is soaked after completing some physical activity. I sweat everywhere and this includes my head and of course that impacts my hair. A silk press won’t last a day so it can’t make the agenda, braids probably wouldn’t last long that makes them not worth the money, and this basically dwindles down styling options. It’s hard find anything that can withstand the amount of perspiration I give off as well as Houston humidity so I tend to keep my hair in a puff. I know the stress on my tresses isn’t great, but my choices are so few right now.
Buying new clothes has to happen more often that preferred. It is a positive aspect of losing weight. Tight clothes are now looser and a few things that I held on to for when I made it to a smaller size have become apart of my wardrobe, but my entire wardrobe has shrank in half. My shirts can now be used a sleepers because they are so big and my favorite lounge around pants don’t stay up after wearing them (freshly washed a dried) after a few hours. To add insult to injury, my workout clothes and workout bras are getting to the point that I need to “Frozen” them. I am apart of the “I hate shopping crew” and because of my need becoming more immediate I’m forced to go into stores versus picking a few pieces online and awaiting their arrival. I’m getting better with shopping, but it’s still not at the top of my list of favorite things to do.
The pain that can come with the next level. Of course there’s a recognition that comes along with beginning a workout routine of possibly being sore and achy. Once your body comes accustomed to the rigors of your routine, you typically need to change it up and/or increase your weights. This puts you back at another starting point. While it may not hurt as much, the pains typically show up after you’ve done leg day and you’re going into a public restroom and trying to squat over the commode or after you done arms and your 2 yo toddler wants to be picked up continuously. After the pain, you get to usually see some results if you stick to it so if you can push through you may see some pecks or hamstrings that don’t shake, rattle, and roll when you walk.

Life With Vitamin D Deficiency

A quick Google search for the side effects for vitamin D deficiency reveals that they are: getting sick or infected often, fatigue and tiredness, bone and back pain, depression, impaired wound healing, bone loss, hair loss, and muscle pain. One of the others not mentioned is weight gain. Some of the common risk factors for becoming deficient are: having dark skin, being elderly, being overweight or obese, not eating much fish or dairy, living far from the equator where sunlight is limited, always using sunscreen, and staying indoors. Unfortunately, I am blessed with a lot of melanin and based on the BMI index I have moved between the range of obese and overweight. The BMI index only matters to me personally in regards to obesity because while I desire to be healthy I have no desire to ever be 135 pounds again. I’m not knocking it, but people would think I was sick.

Vitamin D deficiency is not something that is very uncommon, yet it’s not talked about often. I honestly would have never taken the time to become familiar with its symptoms if I never experienced the extreme side effects of becoming deficient. My experience didn’t become a thing until after pregnancy #2 (2013) and I had gotten back into a really good workout routine. I was training for a 5K and worked really hard at finding my form. I would run around 20-25 miles per week (between the group and alone) as prep and those were all outside miles. Initially the weight fell off as expected. The second month of training, bad things started happening. Within 2-4 week period I had gained 20 pounds and had no energy for anything. In spite of a restful night of sleep, I would wake up feeling as if I hadn’t slept at all. Frequent naps were taken during the day if possible, but for the most part coffee and pure push were what kept me going. In the midst of extreme fatigue came pain. There was no part of my body that didn’t experience some level of pain and eventually I was forced to crawl around the house to reach my children. I would sit on the floor to get dressed versus standing and during this time I was forced to encourage a lot more autonomy and independence on my oldest. While I didn’t stop my training and I did complete the 5K, I knew I had to figure out what was wrong. My mother passed way in 2005 from pancreatic cancer and that caused worry and angst to be apart of my life for a while. During an appointment with my ob-gyn, I alerted her to my concerns as well as my level of physical activity. She informed me of different possibilities and requested blood samples be provided. It was determined that my vitamin D levels very severely deficient and this was why I was experiencing the symptoms at such a high level. I was prescribed Replesta 120,000 IUs and had to take it for 8 weeks. The first few weeks didn’t offer reprieve and there weren’t any noticeable changes until around week 6.

Cue bout #2. This second time I felt that I was more prepared because I felt that I would be able to recognize the symptoms much sooner. As we all are aware life happens on a different clock than ours. To make a long story short, we ended up moving from SC to TX four weeks after the birth of baby #3. There was no social network setup so I basically had to figure our everything while trying to breastfeed and entertain a 6 and 4 year old. I forgot to mention that it was the summer and Houston heat and humidity are no joke so of course I didn’t feel super excited about taking my 4 week old out and about in our new city. Within a month of the move, I decided to get back on my wellness journey and started back working out. Once again, things started off with a bang and within a few weeks I was losing weight and feeling great. There were even a few new clothing item purchases made because I was sliming down quickly (almost two years later I am now able to wear this stuff!). The onset of symptoms happened completely different the second time. One day I felt great and the next day I didn’t. I went from being able to walk normally and having energy to needing to crawl around to get up the stairs. Weight stopped falling off and starting piling back on. vitamin D was immediately purchased and once again the progress of getting back on track was slow, but eventually came. One of the differences this time was that my anxiety/depression was affected, and most certainly leaned towards me having postpartum. This is something that I wasn’t able to recognize until I came out of my “fog”, but I’m aware that it could have been much worse for me than it was. I didn’t get professional help and during that time my coping skills were a better diet, exercise, and meditation/prayer/devotion. Over the course of months there was improvement.

Based on my experiences, I’m now a Vitamin D advocate and encourage any of my friends that share on social media about anxiety/depression to consider seeing the doctor to have their levels tested. There is a sense of disappointment sometimes because I remember struggling with depression a few times throughout the years and I can only help but wonder if this was a contributing factor. It has taken nearly a year and a half, but there is some sense of normalcy now and I am able to function on a daily basis. Vitamin D and Turmeric are apart of daily life as much as coffee and I’m okay with that. Based on some of the other things I’ve experienced, I’m almost certain that this final pregnancy has pushed me towards pre-menopause (my doctor hasn’t really investigated this for me and 37 really isn’t a push to consider it) and that sort of thing has major impacts on weight loss.
